Inside the Tatami Tote: Notes from a 4th-Generation Kumamoto Workshop
Share
Some objects exist to be carried. The Tatami Tote was made to be lived with.
For four generations, our family has woven tatami in Kumamoto — the same craft that lines the floors of teahouses and ryokans across Japan. The Tatami Tote brings that same fiber out of the room and onto your shoulder.
What makes it different
The exterior is woven from modern tatami fiber — softer than it looks, water-resistant, and color-fast. Unlike traditional igusa (rush grass), this fiber won't fade or stain. The interior is lined for laptops, books, and a water bottle. The base is structured so the bag holds its shape through years of daily use.
Three sizes
- Small — for short errands, a wallet, and a paperback
- - Medium — for a workday, a laptop, and a notebook
- - Large — for travel, a change of clothes, and a thermos
Made in Kumamoto
Every Tatami Tote is woven by a 4th-generation artisan in our Kumamoto workshop. The weave takes time. The fit takes longer. We don't mass-produce — each bag passes through the same hands that have woven tatami for over a century.
A bag that softens with use
Like a good leather jacket or a well-loved book, the Tatami Tote gets better with time. The fiber softens. The handles take the shape of your grip. The character it builds is yours.
Worldwide shipping
